With support from the Coastal Fund in Fall 2008 and Winter 2009, CCBER developed a new course (EEMB 189) and internship--Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration: Education Practicum--taught by Dr. Jennifer Thorsch and Education Coordinator Janet Myers. The UCSB graduate and undergraduate students learn environmental content as well as teaching strategies that they practice on field trips and in the classroom while serving as docents for the yearlong Kids In Nature program.

Another exciting aspect of this program is the formation of a collaboration between CCBER and the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education (GGSE). Their new Science Education minor is part of the Science Mathematics Initiative, which is a UC-wide initiative focused on recruiting and training undergraduates for careers in secondary science education and mathematics teaching. The program addresses state and national concerns about the critical shortage of qualified science and mathematics teachers. Our new course will be one of the required courses for the minor. Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration: Education Practicum fills a gap in UCSB students’ education as evidenced by the interest and enthusiasm for the program. For fall and winter quarters we received over 50 applications from undergraduate and graduate students. water
